  • Can affordable headsets be used to help children with glue ear to hear?

    Title of the research: Using a bone conduction headset to improve speech discrimination in children with otitis media with effusion (2016-2018).

    Published in Trends in Hearing Journal 2019.

    A summary of the study: 20 children age 3-6y with a diagnosis of glue ear trialled the headset. Results showed statistically significant superiority in hearing speech at quieter decibel level. (Children had a 16 dB improvement in hearing support on average in this study, this compares to 12dB on average from grommet/ ventilation tubes as reported on Cochrane review).

  • Is the Hear Glue Ear app useful to children and their families?

    Title of research: An evaluation of the Hear Glue Ear mobile application for children aged 2-8 years old with otitis media with effusion

    Published in Digital Health Journal 2020.

    A summary of the study: 60 families trialled the Hear Glue Ear app, 73% downloaded and used the app between appointments. Results showed statistically comparable estimate of hearing loss on HearGlueEar app home hearing screening game vs standard hearing screening.

  • What happens if children use the HearGlue Ear kit when they have normal hearing?

    Title of study : Speech discrimination and word identification with a consumer-level bone-conduction headset and remote microphone for children with normal hearing.

    A summary of the study: 20 children aged 4-11y with normal hearing demonstrated improved discrimination of speech in quiet and noise when wearing a headset.

  • Can the Hear Glue Ear kit be used to support children remotely during the covid pandemic when there were no grommet operations?

    Title of study: Bone conduction hearing kit for children with glue ear.

    A summary of the study: 26 children aged 3-11y with glue ear waiting during the pandemic for a grommet operation. Due to covid-19 Hear Glue Ear product was sent in the post. Children were managed remotely which supported children until services reopened or until their glue ear self resolved. Read the study here:
